Our Approach to Residential Treatment
Spruce Mountain Inn strictly adheres to therapy modalities that are evidence-based and that are proven to be best practices—meaning there are years of research showing these modalities to be effective.
For decades Spruce Mountain Inn has understood the importance of group work and a structured schedule for our residents. This is why we have a longstanding requirement that residents be willing to commit to a minimum of 30 hours of scheduled programming. The 30 hours of programming center on these six key areas: group therapy, individual therapy, family therapy, school/work, healthy living, and independent living skills.
Our small campus gives us the advantage of fostering community and getting to know the needs of each of our residents. Because therapists carry small caseloads, they get to know residents as individuals, becoming familiar with their worries and fears, strengths and potential. Therapists are able to observe residents in their day-to-day living and take advantage of key moments to engage them therapeutically in, and out of the therapy office. At Spruce Mountain Inn, we know that therapeutic rapport is a key component in creating lasting change.
One of the program’s standout features is its incorporation of Vermont’s natural beauty into the change process. By providing opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, cycling, canoeing, and swimming, Spruce Mountain Inn not only encourages physical wellness but also fosters a deep connection with nature—a therapeutic element that can be profoundly transformative.
Spruce Mountain Inn accepts out-of-network insurance benefits through our partnership with Bridgeway Billing.
The Spruce approach to residential treatment and counseling includes:
Individual Therapy
Each resident meets weekly with his/her/their individual therapist to examine the thoughts and emotions affecting daily behaviors and relationships. This work involves targeting the necessary changes for next steps toward successful adulthood. In addition, residents interact with their therapists throughout the week in group therapy sessions, lunchtime, and in the general milieu.
Our therapists are trained in several treatment modalities, including:
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy)
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy)
IFS (Internal Family Systems Therapy)
ERP (Exposure Response Prevention)
ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)
Mindfulness
Brainspotting
Family Therapy
Individual family therapy sessions are scheduled weekly. This is a time for exploring the situations and factors that may be keeping a family stuck in negative patterns. The therapist will guide family members through an exploration of their individual roles and help them identify adverse dynamics that may be impeding positive change. A family in crisis may have difficulty in navigating this terrain on their own. The therapist will help facilitate learning new and healthier ways family members can relate to one another. Family therapy is conducted via video-conferencing.
Group Therapy
Group therapy plays a significant role in Spruce Mountain Inn’s program. Throughout the week, residents participate in a variety of groups—namely, psychotherapy, psychoeducational therapy, and experiential therapy. Group therapy sessions are designed to provide a safe and structured environment in which individuals can articulate feelings and receive social feedback. Individuals who feel they are alone in their struggles may feel encouraged to find common ground with their peers. Group therapy settings can also help foster social skills and can improve self-esteem. Some groups are intended to provide a space for processing emotional issues and for exploring ways to cope with and manage distress. Other groups are centered around physical activities—for example, Adventure Group, and Expressive Art Group.
Groups can serve as a means for residents to better understand themselves in the context of their relationships. Participation in group therapy helps residents become aware of their interpersonal behaviors, patterns, reactions, and choices. Groups also provide a space in which residents can practice their new social and coping skills in real time.
Parent Support
Parent support meetings provide a valuable environment for parents to learn and implement new strategies for interacting with their young adult. These biweekly meetings offer a supportive space for a parent to discuss challenges, share success stories, and receive guidance from trained professionals. By participating in these meetings, parents can learn effective communication techniques, gain insights into child development, and hear norms regarding parents facing similar issues. Additionally, the accountability and consistency of attending regular meetings help parents stay focused on their goals and track their progress over time. Overall, parent support meetings serve as a crucial resource for parents seeking to improve their parenting skills and foster positive relationships with their young adult.
ADHD Coaching
ADHD coaching is a specialized form of support designed to help individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder achieve their personal and professional goals. Unlike traditional therapy, ADHD coaching focuses on practical strategies, accountability, and skill development to empower clients in managing their symptoms effectively. Coaches work collaboratively with clients to identify challenges, set achievable objectives, and create structured plans tailored to their unique needs. This process often includes developing organizational skills, improving time management, and enhancing social interactions. By fostering self-awareness and resilience, ADHD coaching can significantly enhance the quality of life for individuals navigating the complexities of ADHD, helping them harness their strengths and reach their full potential.
Work and Volunteerism
The Spruce Mountain Inn Career Development Program offers residents the opportunity to gain new skills as well as increased personal autonomy. Residents can benefit from the vocationally-related components of our Life Skills Program, volunteer placements, and competitive employment. Our emphasis on volunteer experiences, college courses, and paid employment provides them with practical skills and experiences that are vital for personal and professional growth. Encouraging residents to explore the cultural and recreational offerings of Central Vermont demonstrates a holistic approach to healing, helping individuals build a well-rounded, balanced life.
Step-Down Housing
The progressive approach to housing, with a “step-down” system, is a noteworthy aspect of Spruce Mountain Inn’s program. This system accommodates residents’ evolving needs as they gain stability and confidence. The availability of on-site studio apartments in the Annex and Walker Lane buildings ensures a supportive environment even as residents transition towards greater independence. The final step toward independence involves relocating from the on-site apartments to Greatwood Lodge, a home we own that is not situated on the Spruce Mountain Inn main property. This house provides young adults with a sense of independence while still offering a safety net.
