A Supportive Residential Treatment Program at Friends Hospital

Founded in 1980, the Greystone Program is located on the wooded 100-acre grounds of Friends Hospital in Northeast Philadelphia. Our residential treatment program is designed to serve individuals with serious mental illness. At Greystone, adults with mental health issues engage with a variety of therapeutic, vocational, and recreational programs as they move toward stabilizing their mental health, achieving greater independence, and enhancing the quality of their lives.

At Greystone, residents live in one of two home settings: the historic Greystone building and the newer Hillside house. Both residences provide our residents with welcoming, family-like settings, nutritious meals, and recreational activities both at home and in the Philadelphia community. The Greystone Program is designed to accommodate individuals for several months or as a long-term residence.

Greystone residents enjoy full access to the 100-acre grounds of Friends Hospital, which include walking trails, creek, and a variety of flora and fauna. Outside the hospital grounds is the city of Philadelphia, which offers a broad panorama of social and cultural activities to our residents. Greystone is licensed by the State of Pennsylvania and accredited by the Joint Commission; we are a past winner of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association Best Practice Award for the Treatment of Schizophrenia.

Individualized Mental Health Care

When it comes to the treatment of mental illness, the need of each person is unique. At Greystone, our trained mental health staff develop residential treatment plans that are unique to each individual.

Each of our residents receives supported treatment from a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals that can include their psychiatrist, the program nurse, and counseling staff. Both of our residential treatment facilities are staffed 24/7. All residents have access to Friends Hospital’s psychiatric and emergency medical services if needed.

At Greystone, we recognize that the families of adults with mental illness are important members of the treatment team. We welcome and encourage the participation of family members in care and treatment planning. All Greystone residents receive medication monitoring, therapy and activity groups, and individualized support for the completion of daily activities such as hygiene, food preparation, and socialization.

Enhanced Quality of Life for Adults with Psychiatric Issues

The Greystone Program’s mission is to significantly enhance the quality of life for those with serious mental illness through psychiatric services, physical activity, a sense of purpose, and a productive lifestyle. We emphasize the development of skills of daily living, socialization and community inclusion, purposeful activity, and recovery. Our holistic approach to recovery from mental illness enables Greystone residents to realize their dignity, worth, and individual potential.
